Resumen
Analiza la presencia del humor en antiguos romances (Durandarte y Belerma, el rey Rodrigo, los Siete Infantes de Lara, etc.) intentando contextualizar el alcance irónico y lúdico que ciertos pasajes podían tener en la Edad Media; además, propone una comparación entre el humor medieval y el moderno, subrayando su universalidad pero al mismo tiempo las diferencias de impacto entre lectores de diversas épocas: «But if we think that some aspects of humour are universal, in the same way as the emotions inherent in the ballads, we can at least test empirically whether such comments actually are funny, regardless of whether they were meant to be» (p. 35)
