Siguiendo una práctica extendida en la Edad Media, el traductor del Tercero Libro se sirvió de diversas fuentes para llevar a cabo su labor, de modo que es casi seguro que la última parte de su traducción procede, no del libro de la Vulgata sino de uno de la Post-Vulgata que contenía una Suite du Merlin además del Lancelot
